Ballymena Primary is committed to inclusion and diversity. Consequently, all children, irrespective of their needs are welcomed. Our Vice-Principal, Mrs Simpson, co-ordinates the Learning Support Programme and liaises with other professionals including psychologists, doctors, occupational therapists, speech therapists and social workers. Mrs Foster is the schools full-time Pastoral Care and Learning Support teacher. She oversees the programme of targeted intervention for any child requiring pastoral or academic support. Two class teachers are trained in Reading Recovery and through the Dissemination of Good Practice Initiative all Foundation and KS1 staff have been trained to use Reading Recovery methods in the classroom context. The work of the teaching staff is complemented by several classroom assistants who support individual children with conditions such as Autism or ADHD. Ballymena Primary also works in partnership with Castle Tower Special Schools outreach programme.
For all children at Stage 2 or above on the Learning Support Register an Individual Education Plan is drawn up in partnership with parents.
