Fireworks Safety Policy
Rationale
The use of fireworks to celebrate events is becoming more popular. In N. Ireland we associate fireworks mainly with Halloween but in recent years they are also used for birthdays, New Year and other events. Unfortunately, every year there are accidents and deaths as a result of bonfires and the irresponsible use of fireworks.
Aims
- To make children aware of the dangers of fireworks and bonfires
- To inform children of the importance of having adequate adult supervision.
- To make children aware that fireworks can upset some people, frighten animals and damage property.
- To inform older children of The Law on Fireworks (NIO 1996).
Learning Outcomes
Children will:
- Understand the need to be safe when using fireworks
- Develop a caring and responsible attitude towards people, animals and property.
- Acquire new concepts, extend their vocabulary and develop their observation and communication skills.
- Have a clearer understanding of the legal requirements for the purchase and use of fireworks.
- Know, understand and put into practice, “The Firework Code” as presented by the NIO.
This policy forms part of the school’s Health Education policy. It has been endorsed by the Board of Governors and will be monitored, reviewed and amended as required.
