Epilepsy Policy
This policy has been written with advice from the Department of Education, Epilepsy Action and local healthcare professionals.
- Ballymena Primary School recognises that epilepsy is a common condition affecting many children young people and welcomes all children with epilepsy to the school.
- We believe that every child with epilepsy has a right to participate fully in the curriculum and life of the school, including all outdoor activities and residential trips.
- Ballymena Primary encourages disclosure of having epilepsy as a recognised medical condition within the school’s admission procedure. When a child with epilepsy joins Ballymena Primary or a current pupil is diagnosed with the condition, a meeting will be arranged with the parents and the pupil to establish how the epilepsy may affect their school life – learning, playing, social development and any first aid issues.
- The school keeps a record of all the medical details of children with epilepsy and keeps parents/carers updated with any issues it feels may affect the child.
- All staff, who come into contact with pupils with epilepsy, are made aware of this policy and are familiar with epilepsy and seizure first aid.
- Procedures for dealing with seizures are visibly displayed in the staffroom and every classroom.
