Environment
and Society
Throughout their time in Ballymena P. S. children study a wide span of
historical periods including the Recent Past, the World War, Early Man,
Vikings and Victorians. The study of Local History is also part of the
pupils' experience. An increasing collection of historical artefacts is
on display, for which the school has won the Museum
in the Classroom award.
In Geography, children study the local area, Northern Ireland and Europe.
Through a European Union sponsored programme the pupils in Ballymena Primary
School have links with several schools in Germany, Greece, Poland and
Finland. The school was awarded
"International School" status
by The British Council for the promotion of an international dimension
in the curriculum. This includes the use of foreign language assistants
and opportunities to learn French and German. Children also undertake
field trips and educational visits to sites of historical or geographical
interest. An annual Activity Holiday is organised for P6/7 pupils.
Creative
and Expressive Studies
Children are provided opportunities to engage in Music, Art and Physical
Education. The school has a specialist Music
Room which houses a wide range of tuned and untuned percussion
instruments. It is used by classes for choir, the school's recorder ensemble
as well as for creative music and appreciation.Tuition by NEELB peripetatic
staff in woodwind/brass and stringed instruments is also available to
selected pupils, some of whom reach Grade 3 standard. Children are encouraged
in the dramatic arts as part of the normal curriculum and through participation
in Assembly, the annual Christmas Service and the school production.
A full programme of P.E. and Games is also offered, including swimming
for P5-P7 classes.
