Literacy is at the heart of primary education. The English curriculum provides opportunities for children to read, to write and to engage in talking and listening activities. The school places emphasis on the building of a sight vocabulary through the use of a structured reading programme and the development of word attack skills through phonics. Three teachers are qualified in Reading Recovery. The school received an award for a literacy initiative under the Dissemination of Good Practice scheme. Children are also encouraged to read widely for pleasure and information. The school has two libraries, an infant library for children in P1 to P3 classes and a central library for children in P4 to P7 classes. These facilities were featured in a recent publication, "Libraries in Primary Schools ~ Guidelines for Good Practice."

As core subjects in the Northern Ireland Curriculum the school offers a wide variety of topics in these important areas of study. In Numeracy children study Number, Shape and Space, Measures and Data-handling. A wide range of mathematical resources ensure that practical activities enhance the learning experience. Through their science activities children learn about themselves, the human body, the variety and diversity of plant and animal life, materials and physical processes. A significant element of the science curriculum is consideration of the importance of developing a healthy life-style, including drugs education.
